New Moon in Sagittarius for 2018
Note: how Astrology individually affects us depends on the placement of planets in our birth chart. These blog posts assume a harmonious or non-complicated interaction between the transiting planets and a birth chart. To learn about your specific chart, I encourage you to book a session with me.
This Friday’s New Moon in Sagittarius, at 2:20 a.m. EST, is the final New Moon before the Winter Solstice. Sagittarius is the last fire sign we encounter during our annual trip through the Zodiac, it’s the final blaze along the annual inward journey that culminates with the Winter Solstice and pivots just after. This is the fire within our roots, well under the soil of our being. When the Moon is new, it’s in the same position as the Sun when viewed from the Earth, which is why it appears dark. This means solar and lunar energies are aligned and united – the driving force that beats our heart – our core identity – is singing the same tune as our subjective interior nature and unconscious, our feelings.
Sagittarius is mutable fire, which means that it’s last permutation of the fire element in the zodiacal cycle. Mutable signs signal the close of seasons, with Sagittarius concluding fall. They’re the most refined, mature, flexible, and adaptable presentations of the signs, as the elemental energy prepares to manifest in a different form. Unsurprisingly, Sagittarius is known for having a few diverse archetypal presentations.
Ruled by Jupiter and subject to Jupiterian expansiveness, benevolence, and adventure, Sagittarius is the sign of the wanderer, learner, and philosopher. Sagittarius asks that we consider expanding our horizons, that we engage our lives with passion and depth, and also that we enjoy ourselves in the process. Sagittarians are known as much for being generous and lively as passionate and driven. Sagittarius is often involved in the pursuit of What Is Right, and there’s little more powerful in battle than a Sagittarius fueled by righteous indignation. Sagittarius is on a quest to find the meaning of life, and the New Moon in Sagittarius can be a profound time to consider what’s meaningful in your life: what exciting for you, what’s purposeful for you, what’s serving your growth process – and what isn’t. These questions are worth answering and even journaling about under the dark of the New Moon, all of which can help us as we approach goal season when the Sun enters Capricorn.
Sun/Moon square Mars/Neptune
Throwing a bit of a wrench into our Sun/Moon conjunction in Sagittarius is the Mars/Neptune conjunction in Pisces that’s squaring it. Mars square Sun and Moon can evoke prominent feelings of frustration or anger, and with the connection between Pisces and Sagittarius, these could relate to deep feelings of being dissatisfied with something in your life. They could also include frustration about political or world events, or just a general feeling of tension. Neptune in Pisces adds a dreamy element to this, which can involve feeling unsure of ourselves and our place in the world. You may feel an extra draw to escape in TV, films, substance use, or relationships. You may feel like your reality isn’t as dense and real as you thought, and for those of us who like to be in control, this could prove quite unsettling. Though this transit will pass relatively quickly, it provides a continued opportunity to engage with our theme of gaining clarity into our deeper sense of meaning and purpose. Sagittarius is the fire that burns in the temples of Mystery. Scorpio may be the sign that sheds the skin and is most driven to revealing the truth (even when that’s scary and inconvenient), but Sagittarius takes up that task, points its bow skyward toward the eternal, and looses its arrow. It calls us to cut through the dross of our life and get to the heart of what makes our hearts beat. Purpose, passion, connection – the vitality of life is the solar zodiacal fire, in its last gasp in Sagittarius before leaving until Spring.
Mercury Goes Direct in Scorpio
The day before the New Moon, Mercury goes direct in Scorpio. If you’ve been waiting to send emails, sign contracts, etc., Mercury is back in your favor. This shift can also help with what I outlined above, in that Mercury stationing and going direct can provide us with increased, focused mental energy. We can then use this energy to process or journey to unearth the meaningful within and consider how to manifest that more in our lives next year.
I drew a Tarot card for the New Moon in Sagittarius and pulled the Three of Pentacles. This card indicates a validation of hard work already performed. Something that you’re building is working – keep at it. Continue refining your skills and working on whatever project is at hand (including inner work). This card can also indicate that external validation is coming to praise your efforts, whether that’s from another person or some kind of external sign.
New Moon Shadow Work
The New Moon is a time of the shadow, but also one of illumination. When the Moon is dark, the stars shine brighter, even if that isn’t as apparent in many places that have heavy light pollution. While much can be revealed under the light of the Full Moon, many subtle aspects of ourselves become clear under the New Moon. This New Moon, consider drawing a bath for yourself, lit only by a few candles, and contemplating your life’s purpose and the meaning you derive from your current life situations. Look for the stars within yourself. What do you see? Is there something within that you haven’t been listening to that calls out to be heard? Is there a change that warrants being made for healing and greater authenticity? The New Moon in Sagittarius is a powerful time to unearth this information and launch an intention to make whatever changes we feel called to. It’s also an excellent time to do journey work around these topics.
